Bringing Classics to life in the modern classroom
With funds from TCA, The Classic Theatre of San Antonio will employ contract artist educators to take Shakespeare and other classic works, into four San Antonio high school classrooms with our “Classics in the Classroom” workshop series during the 2015-2016 school year. The schools will be selected based on application, with those schools with the most limited access to art programming given priority. Classic Theatre will work closely with the teachers of classes currently reading a Shakespeare text or other classic piece (required in Texas public schools grades 9-12; Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Julius Caesar and Macbeth). These artist educators will visit classrooms during the school day to read scenes with the class as part of a literature, theater or humanities course and participate in discussions of the play. Throughout the weeks of study, the artists will continue to visit the class to present at least 2 of the following workshops, tailored to fit the targeted age group, address TEKS requirements and class emphasis:
Setting: Exploring the time-period and the political and cultural influences surrounding the play being studied.
Performing the Text: From the period style of movement to stressing inflection within the meter, students will use small portions of text (Sonnets, monologues) to bring the classics to life themselves…in 45 minutes or less!
Analyzing the Text: This workshop will focus on finding the deeper meaning and introduce the concepts of prose versus verse, allusion, metaphor, imagery and other elements of literature, all of which can be applied to any other text. In developing a modern-day translation, the student can use the “actor’s toolbox” to unlock the meaning and the message of the work.
The workshops will culminate in a special performance of a scene from the play by our contract artists with full costume and rudimentary set pieces at the school. Students may also perform alongside these artists, time permitting.
The goal of The Classic Theatre’s “Classics in the Classroom” program is to bring the language of the classics to life in a modern classroom and to give students text analysis skills they can take with them to college and greater confidence studying classic works.
